The old cable car was a facility that dated back to 1969. The passage of time had to exhaust its life and obsolescence. That is why in 2004 the company Barcelona Metropolitan Transport (TMB) decided to replace to suit the new requirements of the city.
The custom of rewiring of the cable car links to the proposed project’s overall management of Montjuic Passeig dels Cims both by improvements in capability, functionality and security, and the fact of being part of the new mobility system planned for the mountain.
The renewal of the cable car essentially maintains the original layout, but relocated stations adapting to new paths of the park, giving accessibility and comfort to users in addition to responding to new technical requirements of the facility. In this context the upper station is relocated outside the perimeter of the castle moat in order to respect the monument and its immediate environment and heritage area.
Besides the new stations enlargeor because they provide accommodation for more robust equipment and technology appropriate for a cable car last generation, with larger booths, faster and with higher safety standards.
