On the campus of the University of Groningen, pvanb architects designed an extension for the second phase of the EBR Library, an office area and conference rooms. The concept of the pavilion is based on several principles. First, the building had to harmonize with the general plan of the campus, buildings and pavilions separated along the docks. At the same time, new construction had to be linked to the newly renovated library and a plaza. Finally, the design had to be developed with a shoestring budget in a very short time.
To accommodate the program in one volume, established the new pentagon-shaped building around a central void. This gap is an element that unites, enlightens and gives more lightness to the building. The pentagonal shape also allows different views of the environment.
The building is built on a steel frame and concrete deck panels sandwich. Was available about a second skin that produces an effect moiréé and a visual play on the front through it.
This visual interaction and the exposure of building elements continues inside. Thus, the library, offices and conference rooms can be experienced as very pleasant spaces in which they appear exceptionally details that build the building.
