Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier


Situated at Poissy, outside Paris, the Villa Savoye of Le Corbusier is one of the most important contributions to modern architecture in the twentieth century. Completed in 1929, this house is a modern French country house welcomes and responds to the era of the new machines. The Villa Savoye became the career of Le Corbusier in a major architectural precedents of history. The detachment of the Villa Savoye of its physical context helps to be integrated within the context of mechanical / industrial at the beginning of the twentieth century, defining the home as a mechanical entity.

Le Corbusier is famous for proclaiming “The house is a machine for living.” This statement does not translate simply to design an assembly line on a human scale, rather the design starts to acquire innovative skills-based advances in other fields of industry, in pursuit of efficiency. In response to their desire and admiration machining design, Le Corbusier set “The 5 points of architecture”, which are a simple list of prewritten elements to be incorporated into the design.

The 5 points of architecture can be thought of as the modern way of interpreting “The 10 books of Architecture” by Vitruvius, not literally in the sense of an instructive manual for architects, but a list of components needed for design. While the Villa Savoye is meticulously tailored to the 5 points of Le Corbusier.
