Van Alen Books is a bookstore in downtown New York, which specializes in architecture and design publicationsAnd is a place where books are read, they are sold, are identified and discussed.

The design for the store was commissioned by the Van Alen Institute and spearheaded by the New Yorker LOT-EK, Known for its combination of artistic aesthetics with a risky industrial style.

Although the space had to sell a large variety of books, The project’s main idea was to create a space for conversation. What makes it even more special is that it is not just a store; is an art installation that serves as a powerful statement about the origin of books and public meeting spaces.

LOT-EK has created a interesting and sustainable design, using recycled doors Build it Green NYCTo perform a wide staircase layers, which hangs in the center of the space. The steps used to sit, but also serve as shelves.

The architects have implemented their own style, having half of their work finely designed and finished, and the other half was left to look more rough and rustic.

In the words of the architects: “Van Alen Books serves more as a statement in support of public gathering spaces. This library addresses the point that despite the fact that the sales of books has declined, public spaces where people can meet and discuss what makes these libraries an important place. “
