Umeå School of Architecture by Henning Larsen Architects + White Arkitekter
” The intention has been to design an open learning environment where every student feels part of the creative learning community . The organization open and informal meeting spaces , light and atmosphere create a laboratory , supporting the idea of development and the creative process “. Umeå School of Architecture has a unique position with respect to the Umeå River . With its open plan interior landscape and sculptural stairs , the building has a strong artistic expression.
As a center of growth for the future architecture , the building’s main function is to provide the platform for inspiration and innovation. the building has a cubic expression with their facades of Larch and square windows located in a vibrant rhythmic sequence on all sides . The interior of the building is designed as a dynamic sequence of steps and split open floor levels , where abstract white boxes hanging loosely from the ceiling by filtering the light coming through the skylights .
One of the key objectives was to create a bright learning environment where everyone is open part of the room (only separated by the division level and glass walls of the classrooms. This design allows for mutual inspiration and exchange near knowledge and ideas.
In contrast to the dynamic atrium, drawing rooms located along the facades of the building on a strict regular sequence of columns and beams , have a simple and rational design . The varied pattern of windows not only creates a strong visual effect, but also allows the light to flow into the building and generously gives stunning river views. will be part of the new Campus of Arts at the University of Umeå , which also include the new building for the Academy of Fine Arts and the Museum of Art, both designed by Henning Larsen Architects.
