This project seeks alterations and additions meet the requirements of giving space for a young family with 3 children under 10 years.

The initial idea was to challenge the conventional type of extension “box back” with a sculptural form born from the constraints of terrain, and the rules back along the southern boundary, comprehensive development program, the desire to maintain both patio as possible and inspiration roofs topography of hills and valleys of the existing Edwardian house. Three children’s bedrooms and a bathroom are located on the cantilevered over the garden on a large living space below. The notion of the Trojan house is reflected in the idea of ??a skin envelope, a built form that contains the unexpected, where the shuttered windows are hidden, and where the internal program is unknown. Internally, this program is extrapolated to fit the container with the children’s rooms and bathrooms on the upper level and the living spaces on the lower level. Again, an unexpected gesture, when children are isolated in their rooms but make them feel part of a larger internal space. A communication through a vacuum that allows thermal chimney functions as a conversation between the upper spaces and living spaces on the lower level. Visual connections between levels can be established through the circular windows cut along the corridor, bathroom and one on the upper rooms.

The rainscreen solution optimizes a passive thermal response to shade the house in summer and insulate it in winter, allowing partially generated hot air gap between the interior and exterior.

In the second level, a corridor and a vacuum / thermal chimney, allow cross ventilation to all rooms as well as driving the hot air up and out of the living spaces during the summer.

The collection of water in the field has been considered to fill the pool and the garden irrigation use an available storage of 11,000 gallons of water. A gray water system also allows you to water the garden as part of sustainable solutions.
