The Pyramid Project by LAR and Fernando Romero


Inspired by the ancient Mayan pyramids and seeking to respond sustainably to their environment, the project office’s Pyramid LAR seeks to create an image that is linked to its context, based on the collective imagination of these ancient buildings of the landscapes of Mexico. With a mixed use residential and office, the building will be located in Merida, the largest city in the Yucatan Peninsula. The percentage of each of the uses may be altered and defined according to demand.

The shape of the building it captures the largest amount of land within the site, set back terraces increasingly upward, creating facades variables at different floors and sides. These consider the installation of solar panels.

All decks are designed to contain a large amount of vegetation, this can reduce the energy needed to cool its facilities and reduce consumption of water for irrigation through the rain. With this operation, the project seeks to integrate the growing current interest in architecture for energy efficiency and ecology as well as re-use strategy to Maya symbiosis between building and nature.
