Atlantic Beach is an established neighborhood in Long Island, outside New York City. It is an area of modest homes with styles from the 1920 and 30, Spanish, Tudor and Art Deco. As demand and housing prices increased in the past decade, many of these old houses were demolished or converted into larger homes. The home Kowalski seeks to insert a distinctly modern house in a context of “people”, respecting the scale and architectural traditions of the community.
The facade facing the street is closed with a traditional driveway and garage. The ground maintains a large garden on the other side with very large trees, and in form and materials is a reminder of the town’s Art Deco heritage. The house of 335 m2 was designed for a family with two children. For your privacy, the main facade is almost entirely white, while the living spaces open onto the garden facing south. The ground floor receives the most public spaces and an open living outdoors.
On the second floor, a hall with a continuous skylight leads to four bedrooms and three bathrooms, while the guest room on the third floor opens onto a terreza on deck with panoramic views of the island and the sea. Customers are collectors of contemporary art and the work of some of his artist friends – like the marble floor access – is incorporated into the architectural design.
The steel structure is coated with a skin EIS, energy efficient, and its principal exterior materials are stucco, black slate, stainless steel and glass. The steel and wood staircase floating in a glass tower illuminating the interior and marking their presence on the front side.
