Because of its location on the heights, the Ellis House enjoys a 180 degree view over the Strait of Puget and the Seattle skyline. The owners wanted the house to be sustainable and in doing so the resulting design, by Coates Design Office, was certified LEED Platinum, becoming the first house in the area to obtain it.
The owners had a particular goal in mind when they decided to build a house on Bainbridge Island in Washington. His aim was twofold: they wanted to demonstrate that sustainability can be achieved without compromising a modern aesthetic design and thus encourage others to follow suit.
The design seeks to minimize its impact on the environment with plenty of sustainable operations, implementation of geothermal, solar and heat recovery technologies advanced, allowing to reduce energy consumption by more than 70% compared with a normal house. Also arranged tanks for rainwater harvesting and a green roof terrace that serves as the family. Thus, the footprint of the project is minimal.
Stunning views of the environment defined the layout of interior spaces that can even be enjoyed from the bath tub owners of the house. The process of design and construction of the house took three years but was worth it to its inhabitants, as they expected that their house was a model of sustainability. He describes one of the owners: “When I saw the sunrise at the Seattle skyline as a backdrop, the whole process took courage.”
