The City of Parla, a town located some 20 kilometers south of Madrid, Spain, made the call to a contest in 2005, in collaboration with the Institute of Architects of Madrid, to build 826 homes spread over a total of six plots to be rented by young people. A new feature of the contest was that the municipal share was only in the management of land and the distribution of the units to prospective tenants. Private companies took over the costs of the competition, construction and management of rental income. These 156 homes are the result of this contest, one of six projects awarded.
The proposal, submitted in the contest with the theme “Building situation”, is based on the nominations of the 1950, which interprets the city from individual experience, leaving behind the functional approach. The plan is seen as a playful colonization of urban space, the release of the ground floor as much as possible, creating a range of activities which vary depending on the user, hours and seasons. This green fitted carpet. connected to the surrounding urban area, housing an area of 35 square meters usable, try to accommodate as many units as possible into the available area, grouped into four compact towers.
Each is organized around a central space, with superior light and ventilation, which promotes interaction between neighbors, both vertically and horizontally, while at the same time, cross ventilation at all levels. A core of vertical communication served on each floor, five bedroom houses and two bedrooms.
Each unit opens onto an outdoor vacuum, not included in square footage required in the program, which brings light, ventilation and energy in homes, at the same time serves as a multipurpose space that can be incorporated into the rooms to enlarge, or perform independently a multi-use space. The only rooms that have a fixed location are the kitchen and bathroom, surrounded by the living rooms and bedrooms. With a limited budget – less than 700 euros per square meter above ground – the four buildings are attached to the anodized aluminum sheet that measures 18 inches wide, which gives them a distinctly contemporary.
