The challenge was to design a vertical structure on the island of Cotonduba also fulfill the function as observation tower. The idea is also that this structure becomes a symbol of welcome for people who come to Rio by air or sea.

Designed by Rafaa for the 2016 Olympic Games, the ‘Solar City Tower’ was a proposal for a competition in Brazil. The structure also generates enough energy for the Vila Olímpica.

Its design allows you to use solar energy during the day for the panels located at ground level. The excess energy produced is piped to pump seawater into the interior of the tower, producing an effect of falling water in the pool. This water simultaneously generates energy through turbines at night. These characteristics make it a sustainable development project in the tower, thus helping to promote among the inhabitants of the city the use of natural resources for energy production.

The Solar City Tower also includes a mixed-use program: amphitheater, auditorium, cafeteria and shops are accessible on the ground floor, from which you access also to the public elevator will lead visitors to different observatories, and a retractable platform to practice bungee.
