Sines Arts Center – Aires Mateus
The building is at the beginning of the main road connecting the village to the sea and marking the traditional entrance to the historic core. The Center contains several activities capable of generating an exceptional building, exhibition spaces, a bookstore, a cinema and theater and a documentation center. The diverse program called to take the whole lot, wrapping the street below ground level and adapting its exterior volume to the monumental scale of the castle walls.
The 4 modules are set on the upper floors in parallel bands interspersed with courtyards. The decks were hung from a bridge structure – supported only on the perimeter walls. This system allowed a spatial configuration in the basement level to suit the dimensions of the common areas, on street level ensures an uninterrupted view through the interior of the building, including the Centre’s activities in everyday life city.
