Conceived as a compact housing and low maintenance for a retired couple in Cottesloe, Western Australia, Salvado Street residence is a beach house inspired by the modernism with a clear and rational to meet the needs of its occupants breaks sub-urban context of brick houses of the ’70s.

The design takes inspiration from the modernist ideals of living, which are tempered by a critical regionalist response on climate and place. Minimal lines and flat shapes refer to the art nouveau style, while the materials and details used a palette of local materials.

The concept plan is based on a typology of courtyard with a pool, around which are organized private spaces and public places of entertainment. This duality is emphasized architecturally separating the treatment of private and public spaces, public spaces are open plan, facing out and with no spaces closed under the floating roof, while the private spaces are focused inward and closed within thick masonry walls that create a sense of privacy and seclusion.

Salvado Street Residence by involving spatial qualities of the International Style and the regional context of the west coast of Australia, reveals a unique take on contemporary Australian architecture.
