Situated on a bluff overlooking the southern coast of Funchal, Reid’s Palace is a luxury hotel that represents the crowning achievement of the Scottish William Reed, a poor boy landed on the island of Madeira at the age of 14 years, whose fortune began with the wine trade. Unfortunately never lived to see the completion of his dream.
Opened in 1891, the ‘ hotel soon became a major area attractions, thanks to the small fleet of boats that greeted each new visitor to the landing. Customers were distinguished, among others, the playwright George Bernard Shaw, Prime Minister Lloyd George and the “princess on a journey” Elisabeth of Austria, known for his frequent transfers after the suicide of his only son Rudolf.
Today the feeling of nobility and the plus is among the attractions of Reid’s Palace is an exclusive semi-tropical garden. Kept in constant bloom throughout the year, flowers and plants from around the world create a wonderful corner to relax and enjoy the breathtaking view.
