ZIP & BDX Studio to complete its proposal for the area east of Tianjin Port, China. Its design goal was to emphasize and continually take advantage of the duality between nature and architecture, the fixed and the changing curves and angles. This is reflected in the geometry chosen as a clear geometric slab floats on the ground, heavily connected with him.
Waves in motion and knotted between them against a tree trunk. Sand dunes formed by wind behavior. These were the images in our minds when we started this project: organic sculptural forms and resting against the hard points clearly defined images suggested by the location of the land: near the sea, the Tianjin port and an artificial beach.
Once inside the complex, the perspective changes and architecture based on nature. The hard slab is divided in half by an undulating green belt. Over a forest of slender columns, branching out into unexpected corners, oval-shaped towers hit the ground. Despite the variation in size and position, the same oval shape is used in two opposite situations actually built as a tower or a light well, with only the sky as a roof. Repeating the same way also provides a rhythm and, along with soil management, connects a path variation along the entire length of the field. We have a vector architecture for a space that is to connect a number of vectors, which in this case are the green courtyards.
From the air, the picture changes for the third time, the wavy-shaped buildings are wrapped around oval nuclei, which by contrast appear as solid points entrenched in our metaphor marina. Due to the functional requirements, geometry is mostly horizontal and therefore looks quiet, but the use of many organic forms gives the necessary degree of variety and different details in every corner of the building.
Functionally, the top layer serves to protect and connect the spaces under it, transforming it into a vast, partially open, commercial and recreational area, not just a shopping mall. From a formal point of view, the strict separation of functions is avoided; similar forms deliver a negligible transition between commercial and residential spaces.
The link between the two lots is also functional, while lot 5 concentrates most public functions, the plot 4 also has a second floor level and use functions related to both the public as residential, club wellness, beauty salon, and daycare.
It was a concession to the ground by breaking our building on the existing street, but this gives us the opportunity to use a serial connector tubes that continue the image of tree branches in the horizontal plane.
In relation to Dongjiang area, the building is designed to work as a milestone. In a fragmented area architecturally, this building is separated itself by its overall size, scale, and of course different, its distinctive design.
