In thinking about roofs, we can say that is another landscape, which is created where the architecture is built. Just as the natural landscape, this landscape has many attractions for the space in which we live. And at the same time, the ceilings have been formed by integrating different types of technologies, then we can consider the roof as “meta-technology of architecture. If we start thinking about designing the architecture on the roofs as meta-technology, we have the opportunity to deliver another technology to make the ceilings are a better landscape for living.
The land is located in a quiet village near Nagoya, Japan. It is a home for a young couple, very close to this there is a old Japanese style house where his parents live. To respect a harmony with the surrounding neighborhood, we proposed a hipped roof and many of the houses in the neighborhood. This pentagonal geometry property of the plant was delivered for maximum space on the ground and bring the open space around it. Then we started thinking about how to live under the second landscape, a pentagonal gable roof.
Four main structural walls were placed in a radial, and this is what makes it possible to take advantage ue outdoor spaces as an extension of the interior spaces. At the heart of the architecture, the radial walls were cut into a dome shape, to make space for dining table. Here, under the highest point of the landscape, we have a high false ceiling and the entire family can enjoy their meals together with wide views to the gardens. In the 5 spaces around lower skies, under the skirts of the landscape, the family can be calm and relax with the proper distance between them, as life in our traditional houses.
In addition to delivering this geometry feature (which is a kind of technology) to the plant of this architecture, we try to use the most common wood for the structural system, the same used on most homes today. The walls were finished with rounded corners and a traditional Japanese white plaster.
