Offices No Picnic – Elding Oscarson
No Picnic is one of the largest consultancies in the world of design, covering industrial design, product design and packaging design and art direction, architecture and consumer awareness.
Among its requirements was the implementation of open and spacious offices, a prototype workshop, an exhibition hall, several project rooms, and a customer area, clearly separated from other spaces, to maintain confidentiality.
For this, the client had found a group of nineteenth century buildings in central Stockholm, mainly consisting of two volumes that had been converted into showrooms in the 80′s, and were in disrepair. Today these buildings enjoy the highest level of historic protection, so the conversion should be sensitive, and had to evaluate each step with a specialist in antiquities.
The architects wanted to get rid of all the layers added to the original building. In the old barn could clear the room and was only necessary to add acoustic treatment to the walls, but in the other volume, the economy and the role required to retain a loft built in 1980.
The attic of the hall lengthwise cut, decreasing the experience of this space. Its edge coincided with the center of the room, so we opted to use an industrial designer method: arbitrary but symmetrical shapes could be sculpted as models in the middle in a mirror, restoring the impression of an entire room by building a delicate aluminum fence along the central axis.
