The city of Liuzhou is located in southern China, in a fertile valley on the banks of Liu. Its history has been marked by a process of continuous development. His first industrial activity was linked to the exploitation of resources, mainly wood and cotton, and today has become the engine of the province of Guangxi, constituting a central element of the machinery industry, metallurgy, automobile and the chemical industry.
After the economic boom in the area and the expansion of the city, the focus is now urban regeneration and strengthening of industrial areas as a legacy of its history. The museum space proposed by the local government has this purpose and is specifically designed to occupy one of the old factories on the banks of the River.
Its location is strategic not only for being next to one of the main arteries of the city, but also because it is an enclave of high landscape value that must be qualified with the conversion of the old structure. The proposal for the museum industry on the analysis of each of the existing buildings, the listing of the elements to preserve and the development of a discourse that relates to each other and the rest of the plot, which will become in a city park.
The three main buildings will be transformed into containers of the principal parts of the program: the permanent exhibition, temporary exhibition space and administrative services and leisure. This metamorphosis intends to maintain its identity, making them neutral volumes whose facade blind holes are homogenized with the same material.
In contrast to the sober treatment of the existing, are added to all new contemporary elements with a bold and unequivocal language. Steel angular shapes are a lightweight structure that unfolds with determination and connects each of the spaces, embracing the three volumes and providing a unifying image of the whole.
It is several elevated walkways that connect buildings to grab your deck with a special relevance: on one side becomes the culmination of the exhibition, becoming a multi-terrace from which to enjoy the scenery, and secondly as inverted to enter an overhead light and neutral interior spaces. The main volume, previously used for machinery, drilling inside to accommodate a central courtyard around which are distributed both the movement of visitors as the various showrooms. This high-rise space becomes the heart of the museum is the entry point and it articulates the inner journey.
