Moon Island by Cuikai Studio
Located on a natural bay formed by the Haihe River, the project office Moon Island Cuikai Studio is part of the Central Business District (CBD) in Tianjin, China. Its location and multi-functionality make it one of the key projects of this new urban area called Tanggu. The project includes incorporating retail, restaurants, showrooms and hotels. How the CBD generates high-density development, the objective of Moon Island is to give “a break” to the area. It extends over 400,000 m2 and its programs are located under a huge green roof to minimize its impact on the skyline.
The cover creates a topography that naturally lowers from the island to the city. Below, the project extends the urban fabric in it and is designed as its continuation through 9 interior streets linked by public spaces. The holes are dug on the roof to let natural light into the interior streets and allow people to move freely from the roof to underground spaces. Includes parking lot, turning the area into a city for pedestrians. The buildings are disappearing under the green roof, which planted a large number of species, enabling them to grow freely.
Sustainably is thought that the rain water is collected and reinjected into the system of the building. Solar panels will be arranged on the roof and the electricity generated by them will run their underground enclosures. ikewise, heating the building work through a geothermal heating and ventilation system of high quality, will be integrated into the parking area to prevent toxic emissions from them.
