The site of the Campus of the University of Chicago is surrounded by a variety of features and buildings of different eras. The mixture of styles was not providing a clear line to follow and easy to relate to this environment was elusive.
The commissioning of the new library services Joe and Rika Mansueto, was to create a space to store 3.5 million books, the effort was then put to obstruct as little as possible open space on the surface and therefore ordered the reading room and the preservation department in the space bright and pleasant to be.
The living space is arranged under a glass dome, elliptical in shape, which breaks this context varied across something new. This design was born of consensus between the client and architects.
The structural mesh shell covering an area of ??36 x 74 meters and sub-insulated glass, representing a minimum and intelligent system to mediate between the changing conditions of the exterior and interior comfort. The interior is fully integrated ventilation, lighting and furniture, made in white oak wood.
