If you want your bedroom to be a warm and cosy haven from the hustle and bustle of the outside world, then turning your sleeping quarters into a cottage-style bedroom is certainly something to consider. Even if you live in the middle of a busy city, having a well-designed cottage-style bedroom will let you feel like you’re actually in the middle of the peaceful countryside.
The key themes to the country cottage style are floral patterns and wooden furniture. And we’re not talking modern treated woods – instead, this look is more about rustic oak, alder and cedar. You want to create a calming and tranquil atmosphere, so the colors, patterns and furniture you use should be simple.
Starting with the walls, you can choose between paper or paint, or a mixture of both. Just remember to stick to pastel-colored paints, and while floral-patterned wall paper will fit the theme well, avoiding prints that have too much going on and distract the eye. Once you have theme for the walls, look at your floors. You could replace that shabby old carpet with a new one, but to get maximum impact from the country look you should have a wooden floor, complemented by a thick floral rug. You may be looking enough to have some beautiful floorboards under there, but there are plenty of modern reproduction styles which can be used to provide the country look.
When it comes to beds, metal frames are the ones to look for. Ideally, you’d bring in a vintage brass one, but these can be very expensive. Again, there are plenty of modern imitations available from the likes of http://www.storagebedsdirect.co.uk which capture the country look without breaking the bank. With furniture, a cosy floral armchair could be a useful addition to the room, but they are not a great use of space. Alternatively, a simple wooden chair will hold its own alongside a chest of drawers and a bedside table in a similar style.
Accessories are a personal choice, but they don’t have to be extravagant or expensive in a country-style home – a row of books and an old clock are sometimes the only wall decoration you’ll need. Add some personal touches, such as framed photographs, and you’ll have a really great cosy cottage-style bedroom.
