Housemuseum Lyon is a pilot project that speculates on the combination of art and way of life, challenging conventional notions of public and private sectors, and explore new relationships between art and architecture through new types hybridized, a “living museum “.
Located in Melbourne, Australia, the building contains the necessary items for a family’s daily needs and requirements of a public museum housing a collection of contemporary Australian art. The building is open every week for public tours and research visits by academics and students. The Homemusuem also has a program of annual concerts, lectures on art and architecture and many other cultural events.
Two large double-height spaces (a “white cube” and a “black box”) anchored to the two ends of the building and are designed explicitly as museum spaces. More private domestic space for the family, are defined and closed forms are located along the two levels of the building.
The spaces in the building are ambiguous in their typological readings, the family kitchen becomes the museum cafe, the black box shows video art is also used for home movies and sleepovers. Private study serves as a research library for visiting scholars and students.
As a pilot project and speculative, the Housemuseum explores new relationships between public and private, art and way of life, breaking new ground in the dialogue between art and architecture.
