Le Monolithe, a mixed-use urban block located in the confluence area of development at the southern tip of Presqu’ile of Lyon, has reached its conclusion. The structure, with a total area of 32,500 m2 combines social housing, rental property, a residence for disabled people, and sales offices. The block consists of five sections, each designed by a different architect, following the plan MVRDV teacher:

MVRDV designed the advertising section of the European integration as a whole facade, citing the EU constitution. ‘Le Monolithe’ was carried out by ING Real Estate Development and Atemi. In 2004, developers ING Real Estate invited a group of international architects to design the master plan, where the winner was chosen as the office MVRDV. Based on this master plan, each architect was asked to design a section, which together form Le Monolithe.
The superblock is an urban mixed-use development comprising a mix of social and rental housing, offices and underground parking. The block is characterized by a large courtyard with a public space, a new marina and park adduced for to the city, so handle that resembled the classic French Grand Gallerie. The block is divided into five sections, as mentioned above, each designed by a different architect to achieve diversity and architectural variety. MVRDV’s office is responsible for the main section in the southern waterfront. Each piece is unique in terms of material, the composition and the architectural expression.
The project is part of urban regeneration project LyonConfluence , a 150 hectare site located on the southern tip of Presqu’ile of Lyon, which joins the Rhone and Saone rivers. The interior of the south face of building MVRDV are protected from the sun through the blinds of aluminum as a reference to the traditional architectural area. The departments within the Monolithe We offer a great diversity in order to attract different population groups, making the block were a reflection of the people of Lyon.
The offices are divided into separate units of at least 500 m², which is accessed by three vertical circulation cores, providing individual access. Each unit allows a flexible adjustment out, depending on the needs and requirements of tenants. All spaces have natural lighting and ventilation. In June 2005, when France and the Netherlands voted against the EU Constitution, MVRDV decided to redesign the facade and integrate a reminder of the values, ideals and needs of the European Union.
When all the blinds are closed, you can read the first article of the European Constitution: “The Union is founded on the values of respect for the rights of dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, rule of law and respect for human rights including the rights of persons belonging to minorities. These values are common in a society in which pluralism, non-discrimination, tolerance, justice, solidarity and equality between women and men prevail. ”
Its purpose is to advocate for a possible ‘yes’ to Europe in the days of protectionism, following the collective spirit of the architects gathered. The adjacent sections were designed by French and Dutch architects Pierre Gautier, Manuelle Gautrand, eCDM and Erik van Egeraat.
