Interpretation Centre at Lagoa das Furnas / Aires Mateus
The project is intended to evoke the architectural landscape The AzoresBased on the shape and materials that make up the collective memory of this island and the archipelago, which has become over time, a second nature of this place. As volumes archetypal buildings are simple and compact, covered with local basalt.
This building stands out as the largest group to build around the pond. As the most outstanding building, the Center for Control and Interpretation of Furnas is based on an intermediate space between the exterior and interior – the patio. This item is being removed from the volume, cutting from inside the central zone (the apex of the hipped roof) to the outer edge of a facade, allowing access to the interior.
This courtyard also becomes the point where the main compartments are revealed inside. These spaces, truncated by subtracting the court held that defines all relationships between interior and exterior. This project was conceived, therefore, like a sculpture, a block of raw material intentionally cut to capture light and the lagoon itself.
The building for temporary accommodation is a compact four-volume water divided into 4 units. This volume is cut in the 4 walls of a wooden threshold that allows light penetration and access to each of the homes. There is an established hierarchy of the highest body of the four spaces, connected to the solar orientation of each unit. The outer wall is structural volume since the internal infrastructure and services are separated by thin wooden partitions.
