House Gerassi – Paulo Mendes da Rocha

Gerassi house is a house designed by Paulo Mendes da Rocha in 1989, located in a residential neighborhood in the city of Sao Paulo in Brazil. It is built with prefabricated reinforced concrete and pre-tensioning. Stands for the space proposed to be linked to a single technological solution.

This house was designed for a couple with two children. The architect proposed to the customer, the engineer Antonio Gerassi and his wife, if you had all this great land to contain the game, pool, garden, among others, think of a large house with prefabricated elements that could mounted on only three days and cost half the price.

Customer interest eventually led to get in touch with the precast factory. Technicians needed for 3 months for the manufacture of structural elements of the project – beams, columns and slabs – a construction project efficiently.

Paulo Mendes da Rocha recalled “When we built the house, which actually began on a Thursday and that Saturday at noon, it was over, met all the neighbors on the sidewalk, to observe this event. They wanted to seize the building, they said it was an exclusively residential neighborhood, and that this remarkable building could not be a house. ”

However, it was possible to design a house to house all the features of a family home, with a certain simplicity of living in it. Since developing the project structure, the architect managed to develop on the ground floor, outside, barbecue area, toilet, pool, garage, garden and central staircase leads to the next level.

On the ground the main level, we develop three functional areas: service, living and sleeping. All rooms connect directly to the room, which is defined as an area for collective use, facilitating greater integration in the family.

This space has an excellent natural lighting and ventilation, thanks to large openings made by glass doors and windows at the top, and additional lighting, a skylight in the roof slab.

Gerassi House represents a major innovation in construction, because at that time was not yet common to use prefabricated elements. Paulo Mendes da Rocha mentioned that we should build with the material at hand, which in this case was chosen as prefabricated system with good results, where the convenience and comfort coexist in the same environment.
