Hof Residence by Studio Granda

Hof House is located in a quiet area of the fjord Skagafjörður, within 100 km of the Arctic Circle. The total order sought to build a house, a church, a barn and a stable. The fjord has an edge over large mountain valleys that reach the rocks and islands Málmey Drangey. The new house directs all its space for capturing this amazing setting.

In this way, the house stands on the basis of specific volumes that are read as units having different heights or to be set back, creating courtyards. The grass field is re-drawn on the covers of the volumes and the existing pasture is cut forming terraces that provide various levels to traffic and terraces. This keeps the field continuity between existing and new edificicación, yet are crafted from private spaces, through the change of level.

Most internal walls are of exposed concrete or painted, and ceilings and doors are oak wood with steel accents. The floor is ceramic tile throughout the house and dark, contrasting with the rest of the materials. The kitchen and bathrooms have marble surfaces.

The house works climatically isolated through thick concrete walls, covered with wood outdoors. Electricity use is minimized by architectural design and what little it takes is generated by hydroelectric and geothermal sources, the latter also generate heat.

While the opening to the valley filled with light inside, the house includes a secondary system of artificial lights and some skylights in their public spaces that create a very bright and open the house to the outside. However, in their most private areas of light is reduced to generate a more intimate setting.
