Hermès has commissioned RDAI agency responsible for designing all of its stores around the world , and now the design of a new space unique and unexpected in Paris . The project, located in a pool of 1935, with a strong character of Art Deco in the heart of Saint-Germaindes-Prés and led by Denis Montel , mixing contrasts and complementarities. Thought more in terms of volume of area, is a radical and surprising action .
The main challenge was to translate the values of Hermès into space heritage and modernity, know-how and creation. The project has a dual approach : first, respect, preserve and reinterpret the architecture of the pool . The only significant change was the lining of the pool for a tile floor . The second approach has a resolution more contemporary. This takes shape through the emergence of 4 wooden elements that contradict and also dialogue with the existing building . The invasion of these modules, flexible, light and nomadic , they suggest the creation of houses within a house.
Access is through a gate in the center of an ancient building in mid-1930 . Using a horizontal shaft of light that guides to the rear where the pool is located. Four elements of different sizes and shapes, with an organic design which recognizes forms of plant or animal world, were built with wooden slats of ash, profile 6 x 4 cm . They are self-supporting structures made from a woven design of double curvature , which reach up to 9 meters high, as attracted by light from above.
Three of these modules house the collections of Hermès. The fourth step follows naturally that leads visitors to the pool and creates the link between access and open space for it. The entire space is naturally lit by skylights in the top, which are softened by metal screens. The undulating white plaster walls are lit from above with LED. The wooden objects are illuminated by an embedded device on the ground which illuminates the structure. In addition, each has a hanging lamp at the top , consisting of 2 wooden rings.
