Aug. 31 opened in Seoul, South Korea made a new cultural center for cargo containers. The building, called Kunsthalle Gwangju and designed by the office Platoon, Is designed for art exhibitions and events emerging.
Thanks to the choice of containers, the center has a very industrial image. And as Platoon, the Kunsthalle Gwangju is an art project itself: “The concept and the program will involve the artists and visitors, interacting with each other. This creates new relationships and inspiring moments. As a social sculpture, the art appears in the city by the existence of this place and its interaction with people. ”
“Not a white cube to show the completed work of international artists to the mere consumption. Cultural development will be experienced under the new strategies of art that raises contemporary life and global society. Kunsthalle invited Korean Gwangju, Asian and global artists to interact with art and aims to develop local artistic interests of the city and the citizens of Gwangju. ”
The center also has an outdoor recreational area on the roofs of some containers. The building has three levels – the sum of three containers – and the last of which opens onto the street to be transparent. It advertised the art shows being made inside and can make variations on the main facade with the time of year.
