Glazed Farm House – Kundig Olson Architects

Located north of Oregon, this small house is conceived as a contemporary glass box that floats above the surrounding wheat fields. The design of the house and barn wood frame responds to local vernacular of barns and farm houses in the Pacific Northwest, responding to both the strong interest of the client in the design of the Glass House by Philip Johnson.

Facing south towards the distant mountains, the house is well adapted to cold, cold summers and hot, dry summers. In winter, the orientation takes advantage of passive solar heat gain low sun angle, while in the summer, the roof overhang and a quebrasol blocks the sun’s heat. Large glass operable windows with cross ventilation deliver high efficiency, reducing the need for home use air conditioning.
