The fear of death is nothing to be seen without being wise, since it is believed to know about what is not known. Death is perhaps the greatest blessing of human beings, no one knows, and yet everyone is afraid as if he knew with absolute certainty that the worst of evils ” (Socrates, 470 a.C, 399 a.C)
Historically we find different definitions of death that we demonstrate how this concept has moved from positions closer to the darkness, pain and fear, into positions related to the concept of sadness, change and light.
Design a building that will live possibly unknown phase of human existence necessarily involves the assumption of uncertainty as a concept to include in the process of ideation.
We understand the building as a place that will resist being forgotten, being in the retina of its users, and therefore a place where the sensitive needs to be controlled. Parameters such as sound, temperature, light, humidity, lighting, privacy, relationship with nature take great importance.
The plot is situated on the outskirts of town, at the end of a cul-de-sac, attached to the municipal sports center and behind a cultural center, both highly active. This situation creates some urban tension, since the building is in the midst of various activities incompatible. In this situation it is proposed to sort the mattress generating plant with sufficient identity to establish itself as ‘center’ of all these public buildings and activities. It has created a forest of 29 Japanese maples dense, capable of articulating, differentiating and limiting the different uses. A forest where separation from all activities.
Additionally, the building is buried in the back, and as if its main facade a cave leaves the field forward. The cover and plant composition exactly like the surrounding soil emphasize this. Allowing from adjacent sports facilities, used daily by municipal schools sports, there is no possibility of direct view. It is for this reason that the building is set around five casts in a yard or ‘bitten space’, which allow the relationship with the outside world is controlled and there is no interaction. From within the room only see the sky and within.
Formally the building ‘being stripped’, it breaks through a virtual structure and cantilever beams that unlocks the limits and meetings of any structural element. A great distance the building is a mass of trees buried in the middle distance has hints that allow to realize the instability of the building, “something that looks calm and displacing the user, slowing their access – Inside, space is seen air, thin and subtle.
Vs. ‘the fragile’, identifiable in this project not as a coincidence but rather as a meeting evoked inside, the strength of its formal and material abroad. The project seeks to reassure the speed in which we live by the clash of these two contrasting situations: an inner light and weightless compared to a blunt and heavy exterior.
The interior-exterior permeability becomes very important in this new town site.
Access is twofold: the main connected to the reception and the cafeteria, as well as management offices and common uses of the morgue, is in the front garden on the edge of the building, ie not made any I break or recess to allow the user read access. Not signaled. It looks, again, displacing the user in relation to the building. This is traditionally a place for family gatherings and friendly, which not only shows affection and respect for the deceased, but also, in many cases, people are not seen for some time. In this situation, ensures that the meetings take place in the outdoor garden and access to the building is usually collective, which we believe emotionally interesting for two reasons: first, lets leave out the greetings and emotions of people who are just rediscover and therefore reduces the sound strident, (remember the morgue is a small building less than 500 m2) and the second, compared to an individual experience of depression, the apparent collective feelings and emotions normally support and improvement.
