The project is a result of competition for the new Embassy of the Czech Republic in the United States. As such, he had to represent the culture and spirit of this country itself.
Our first goal was to create a suitable project in terms of size and character, the surrounding neighborhood. At the same time, it was critical to have a structure that fulfills the functions of an embassy, to interfere as little as possible on the environment, using the morphology of the terrain to shape the architecture and the building blend into the environment. We decided to develop the project in several volumes is not very high, arranged between terraces and tied together by gardens.
Some areas were closed and placed under the ground due to security requirements. For these requirements, it was necessary to bury one third of the structure. Moreover, we try to “connect” green roofs and gardens of the park and forest around the site, and deliver large, clear view of the building. We convert the strict security requirements of the structure into an advantage – the complex has a high level of privacy from the nearby streets. The idea was to provide shelter and a sense of familiarity within its walls, while blending with nature. Gapes, dignity, sustainability and respect for the environment and the neighbors were the main targets.
