Deronda Residence by Space International
This exclusive residence is situated near the apex of Beachwood Canyon in the Hollywood Hills , just under the shadow of the Hollywood letters on the hill. Using the footprint of an existing house, this new residence consists of two rectangular volumes that are rotated off-axis from each other to emphasize the difference in their internal program .
The public areas “to be “in the house are located on the top of the field to take advantage of the outdoor spaces surrounding it, which are designed as an extension of the living areas , dining room and kitchen. Large areas of sliding glass panels connect these spaces to the terraces adjacent to the views beyond, investing in the inner opening of a covered outdoor area .
The most private areas are located in a more closed and lined block , which floats on the hillside and is set amidst tall pine trees located on the perimeter of the property. A white plaster shell marks the spatial hierarchy of the house , operating as a support plate floor for private volume , then folded up to serve as a ceiling level on the more public spaces . This undulating skin improves and mitigates the different degrees of enclosure and exposure to environments pictorial views of the city and surrounding property.
