DC Boogie Woogie is a new, nine-unit apartment building that blends accessible living with contemporary urban lifestyle. The site, located across from the Mt. Vernon Square metro, originally housed six apartments for the elderly. At DC Boogie Woogie’s conception, the intention was to replace the current housing with a new three-story building with an elevator for the same tenants. However, the owner, having found suitable replacement housing for their tenants before construction, decided to offer the units to all ages. The change in program allowed for the addition of mezzanines to the upper units.

Six one-bedroom units occupy the first two floors while the third floor contains three one-bedroom units with lofts and outdoor terraces. With a focus on efficient design that offers comfort, all units contain open living areas with large wrapping windows from floor to ceiling, providing ample natural light, two or three exposures, and cross-ventilation.

The exterior utilizes the opportunity to energize the streetscape with the use of brightly colored metal panels. The colorful façade highlights the eccentricity of the surrounding neighborhood and gives a playful tone to the street. In a neighborhood where most buildings are public and affordable housing with dark brick facades, DC Boogie Woogie’s color brings color, happiness, and cheerfulness to its surroundings.
