Crucibles Cube presented an opportunity to radically interweave the house and the site, both conceptually and materially, through the use of locally quarried stone and by using the house to frame the spectacular views of the Marlborough Downs. Our building proposal begins with the idea of a cube of stone cut roughly from a quarry, with facets chiseled out of it.
The concept of the cube is played out at multiple scales – in the site plan, house, rooms, and stone blocks. By rigorously implementing the logic of the cube at each scale, the building takes on a firm and dramatic presence in the landscape. The clarity of the cube concept enables variation and flexibility within the system. Using a 5.5 meter cube as a primary building unit, we have defined six types of rooms derived from the programmatic requirements of the brief.
