Contemporaine by Perkins + Will
Contemporaine is a building of 28 apartments situated on a corner in River North, a section of Chicago. The building consists of a 11-story residential tower and a base of 4 floors of parking and commerce. The structural quality of the tower and the articulation of their parts, working to mediate the various scales of building surrounding context.
The great mass of the building is broken by a series of bands of small protruding cantilevered balconies. The east facade cracks to break even as well as for mass give more views of the city. Two reinforced concrete walls and the ceiling plane frame the volume and give a different profile to Wells Street.

The departments have free plants with large expanses of glass allowing natural light and dynamic views of the city. The building is distinguished from most of his contemporaries in the city. Through simple manipulations of modern materials, sculpted body, the access of residents, and texture generated by the arrangement of windows, the building makes a strong statement of the urban landscape.
