Brick House – AZL architects

Based on local courtyard houses, the design evolved from the interaction of two brick houses with the surrounding landscape. Terracotta bricks were made of clay and local knowledge, making up the structure and facades. Skilled workers from the village are very familiar with the environment where they can provide the nexus of traditional design know-how “with new progressive design.

It produced three different skin textures for brick facade. Interlacing pattern leaves holes between the bricks, and bricks protruding cast shadows along the wall. The windows accentuate the texture, and masonry along the edges of these sites beyond geometric relationships develop by remaining loyal to the structural logic.

Entirely dependent on materials and local labor, the project was able to be constructed by the regular budget of 80 euros per square meter. The client is a famous poet in China and spent much time in the process, working in cooperation with the architect.
