Office Make Architects has recently joined an eco-house to the city of Bolton, and if approved, will be the first zero-carbon house in northwest England. The house of 743 m² has been designed through close collaboration between the client, the municipality and CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment). The following pictures and description of the project.

The client has had an important role in the design process from the beginning and put great emphasis on preserving the natural beauty of the area. The high quality design was an important factor, but the opportunity to give a home to extreme environmental efficiency was the starting point of the project.

The project aims to test the design and construction more common. The four-bedroom house on one level, is integrated into the side of Mount Pennine, minimizing the visual impact on the surrounding landscape and creating a cover with flowers and herbs that naturally flow over the house.

This was designed to consume very little power, a geothermal heat pump, photovoltaic panels and a wind turbine will generate renewable energy. The location and orientation of the house were carefully considered and will be built using local materials and traditional construction methods.

The design team has worked closely with Peter Rolton, A key member of the government in charge of issues related to renewable and sustainable energy, and the proposed scheme has been identified as an example within the Government’s sustainable program called Planning Performance Agreements for Renewable and Low Carbon Energy Schemes.
