Aurland Look out by Saunders arkitektur & Wilhelmsen arkitektur
This project is located in Aurland viewpoint, a small town in Sogn og Fjordane, one of the largest fjords on the west coast of Norway, three hours from Bergen. Saunders and Wilhelmsen was one of the three offices invited to design a proposal for this place and worked closely with engineers from Node. The project was constructed in late 2005 and was officially opened in June 2006. This place has always attracted people from around the world. Therefore, when submitting the proposal is called “640 feet above Aurland and 20,120 kilometers of Tokyo , putting relevant only thing he could be here with the rest of the world.
Faced with such an impressive natural surroundings, the architects decided to play as much as possible the landscape and terrain. It was very hard to improve the place and keep its atmosphere, and yet very easy to make it worse when you insert a foreign element. The concept of the proposal should be very minimal and complement the existing nature. One of the first things they decided to do was to have parking for 2 buses and 10 cars a few yards of the lookout to avoid contaminating the views. The proposed construction is a bridge to 9 m high, with a cantilevered wooden structure that you walk to the viewing. Is 4 m wide and 30 m long.
To make the situation even more dramatic, wanted to enhance the experience of walking on a bridge – a precipice, that bends down without a rail end. So visitors are on the edge of the hillside, with a glass railing against the immensity of the landscape.
