Annie Residence by Alter Studio
Two blocks east of South Congress Avenue, almost at the top of a subtle elevation from Ladybird Lake, the house takes Annie circumstances as the main reason for its shape. The elevation combined with the presence of a small courtyard of a church directly across the street, suggest the potential of the views towards the city center from the second floor.
As a result, the typical development of public and private spaces is reversed: the main living spaces are located on the upper level with a glazed wall to the north to the views of the city, while the rooms open onto private patios in downstairs. An exterior spiral staircase connects the house to a deck on the roof and the breeze is always present at the scene.
Home for a young professional couple and their new and growing family, the desire for a modern identity was also a goal in the design of this home. A steel staircase greets visitors on entering and amounts to an open living area is accompanied by the kitchen and dining spaces.
The screens of translucent panels deliver a degree of privacy and a sense of color to higher volume and a projecting window frames the view into the adjacent lane (and delivers a pleasant resting place for the family dog). Away from the street traffic below, the family life against the background of the treetops and city skyline.
