In the Italian Alps, the barns vary in shape, materials and structure from region to region. In the Cadore , located in the resort of the Dolomites , in a declared World Heritage by UNESCO, the barn in the Alps is built mostly of wood and stone. The floor of the barns have been typically used as stables and barns upper floors . Were asked to design a conversion of a barn on a holiday in Selva di Cadore, in the name of a mountain enthusiast and his family.
The starting point was the careful removal of wood and structural joints. After the building had been dismantled , many beams and boards were cleaned and restored , while others were replaced with treated timber to maintain color continuity of the material before being traced. From a volumetric perspective , some attachments that limit the original volume were removed and only the essentials have remained discreetly integrated .
The new structure in the light of black steel modular respects the geometry of the barn and the original structure madera.Pocas steel beams are covered with wood. The building uses energy self -sufficient thanks to an integrated photovoltaic system on the roof , which is of larch. It also generates zero emissions, thanks to a system of electric underfloor heating .
Great attention was paid to the selection of materials ( larch and fir , Dolomite stone , steel, black, white rough plaster ) , their interaction and the light coming from the windows. Each home environment is characterized by an exact tissue of these five materials that creates a balanced and integrated system in each room.
