Retro chic is always a great way to give your home a bit of personality – and it doesn’t all have to be about kitschy lava lamps and bead curtains, either! A few touches of vintage items or references to pop culture are all you need to jazz up a living room in a quirky, fun way – and at least you don’t have to worry about it going out of style! Here’s a few interior décor items you could use to get the effect, spanning everything from 80s gaming to the diner culture of the 1950s.
8-bit blinds
You don’t have to be a gamer to appreciate the retro appeal of having Pac-Man or Space Invaders on your window dressings, and these Direct Blinds designs offer just that! They’re a great way to turn something that’s usually a bit functional and boring – namely, blinds – into something that really livens up your wall space and injects a bit of geek chic into the room. Available in a variety of colours and eye-catching designs, they add a bit of subtle 80s flair to your living room or study. See some snaps of them here.
USB jukeboxes
Combine modern technology with 1950s flair with a mini-jukebox that can plug into your computer. Inspired by the classic Steepletone design, they feature colour-changing lights, a front-loading CD player and MP3-playing ability. You could use it as a one-off curio, or get it to complete a 1950s diner scheme in the room – don’t forget a tin Coca-cola sign and a milkshake machine for some real authenticity! If you want to go the whole hog, chequered print walls and floors will give the room that Greased Lightning edge.
Mad Men bed
Everyone envies the Drapers’ sense of style, and Mad Men has played a huge role in influencing the retro revival of the last few years. If you want to get the Mad Men look in the bedroom, start with the bed: it sits low to the ground and must have an upholstered tufted headboard (you could even cheat and just buy the headboard separately). Next, enhance the effect with vintage lampshades, and hanging diamond-shaped wall decorations above the bed is a nice touch.
